The Westfield Washington Public Library is CLOSED on Monday, September 5th, 2011 in observance of Labor Day.
On September 5th, we celebrate the historic tribute to the American worker. Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
Labor Day also celebrates the reforms and laws that protect workers every day in the workplace. The United States Department of Labor website has information on events in labor history, such as the 100 year commemoration of The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911.
They also explain the true stories behind labor icons such as Rosie the Riveter, seen in the graphic above.
USA.gov provides resources on the topic of Labor Day, a day recognized since 1882. Included there are a collection of statistics, historical information on labor unions, job search information, and tips on how to spend the weekend.
